CASE STUDY
Modernizing Legacy Laboratory Data Access and Preservation

Case Study Download
Client & Scale
University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), one of the UK’s leading academic health systems, required preservation of extensive historical laboratory data stored within a legacy SunQuest laboratory information system. The data supports ongoing clinical care, research, education, and operational needs across the organization.
The Problem
UCLH relied on a legacy laboratory environment operating beyond its supported lifecycle. Historical patient data remained valuable, but the platform created growing security, infrastructure, accessibility, and support challenges. Limited documentation and diminishing institutional knowledge made it harder to preserve long-term access to critical records.
The Solution
JTG developed a structured legacy data modernization approach, analyzing historical datasets, evaluating data relationships, and preparing information for migration into a modern SQL-based archive platform. Working with UCLH stakeholders, JTG aligned extraction, validation, and archive planning to support future accessibility and usability.
Contribution
JTG provided legacy data extraction, laboratory informatics consulting, data analysis, stakeholder collaboration, and modernization planning support. By combining laboratory system expertise with practical migration guidance, JTG helped preserve critical clinical history, reduce reliance on unsupported infrastructure, and support long-term data access.
